Winter months, at least for me, can be LONG. Adding variety to the daily grind helped me pass those cold months while raising two children. My one daughter loved winter outdoor activities like tobogganing, skating and making snowmen. My youngest daughter, on the other hand, would wear her bathing suit in the house and peer out at us playing in the snow. Talk about being opposite!
To mix it up and defy routine, we would plan a picnic in our basement in hopes of springtime. The basement in our one rented house wasn’t the nicest (the girls said they were afraid of that yucky wallpaper and I don’t blame them). What mattered was that this was our beach and we had it to ourselves. No ants and no birds. Money was tight making it impossible to take them to a warm tropical island. So I brought the island to our basement!
Life is what we make it. We can be Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh or Tigger. Well, ok, maybe someone in between. Life can either be a drag or it can be full of possibilities. The three of us made possibilities!
Ecclesiastes 3:12, “I know the best thing we can do is to always enjoy life.” Hum…. I wonder if King Solomon ever had a fun picnic?
With winter’s sub-zero temperatures and snow falling, the girls and I were found enjoying a picnic. The years have flown by and they are now adults. Tears still fill my eyes as I remember those precious memories during those cold wintry months.

Today in North Texas we are housebound by a rare ice storm. Though basements are even more rare due to our porous limestone landscapes, your suggestions are timely, as always. You’re a model mom.
