Life was topsy turvy that first Christmas as a Single Mom.  My ex had left the end of September and I was left trying to figure out this new life. My desire was to keep the home stable for the girls. Christmas was such a fun time for me growing up and then raising a family. That particular Christmas season….not so much.

ID-100124357Just before Christmas, someone gave the girls and I tickets to the Nutcracker Suite Ballet. What a wonderful surprise and gift. Someone invested in our lives with three paper tickets.  Money was very tight and I could never have paid for it, let alone even think about wanting to go to a Ballet.

We got dressed up, I curled their hair, and off we went.  You would have thought we were headed to a Broadway theater.

It was a gift that the girls and I still remember with fondness.  Could we have used the nutcrackermoney? Probably.  Yet, this first Christmas, living in a whirlwind due to a broken home where emotions were bouncing off the walls, the girls and I sat in a magical world.  It was filled with beautiful music and glorious costumes set in a Christmas setting.

During the months and years that followed, I felt blessed in many ways during each Christmas season.  Some years I spent alone when the girls were at their dad’s, while other years, I was surrounded by many people.  I can say that whatever situation I faced during Christmas, I was blessed with unconditional love from God.  He knew, my first year of my single motherhood, that a ballet would bless us.

That very first Christmas over 2000 years ago, in a crude stable, He blessed all of us with Jesus.  This was His perfect gift to us offering eternal life if we receive it.

John 3:16 (CEV),  God loved the people of this world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who has faith in him will have eternal life and never really die.

I have gone to the Nutcracker Ballet again, yet my heart always feels warmed with the memory that someone blessed the three of us that first Christmas 1997.  God loves to bless us in ways we don’t expect it.
