As a Single mom, it is easy to remember the painful words or painful situations that brought us to our singleness. It can be easy to live in the past and keep re-playing it over and over. Why? Why? Why did this have to happen?
I was just as guilty as anyone to ask this question many times especially when I was having a rough day. Life didn’t make sense and so unfair.
Jeremiah wrote something I could relate to in Lamentations 3:19-26
“Just thinking of my troubles and my lonely wandering makes me miserable. That’s all I ever think about and I am depressed. Then I remember something that fills me with hope. The Lord’s kindness never fails! If he had not been merciful, we would have been destroyed. The Lord can always be trusted to show mercy each morning. Deep in my heart I say, “The Lord is all I need; I can depend on him!” The Lord is kind to everyone who trusts and obeys him. It is good to wait patiently for the Lord to save us.”
It’s ok to have a sad ‘remember when’ day from time to time. As you begin to let God fill you with His hope, those remember when days will be more positive than negative. I found myself letting go of the sad ones and filling them with good positive ones with the girls, family and friends.
Late one Friday night, on a busy highway, while driving the girls to meet their dad; my tire went flat. Of course that is the time when my bladder was full! Roadside assistance came and put on my little tire to make it to my destination. What was so nice was the roadside company never used up one of my calls. Believe me, I needed all my calls for the many times I left my keys in the car!
I drive by that spot from time to time, and am reminded as Jeremiah said, “The Lord is all I need, I can depend on him!” This isn’t a big dramatic story about a flat tire. I could have become bitter that I had to drive to meet my ex and buy a brand new tire. However, God have me one of His hugs and protected the girls and I on that late night as cars whizzed past us by sending a kind roadside assistant service man. God is there to help in big and small circumstances of our life.
- Why not making up a book of positive stories to keep and turn to from time to time. Your kids will love it too!
- Ask God for some of His hugs. Goodness knows we need them.
- Take some of those negative memories from your past and box them up. Open a new box to fill with positive ones. We have a past, we have a present and we have a positive future!
YOU CAN DO THIS!!!
